Basics of Firearms Safety

TARGET BLINDNESS

Another critical area is "target blindness".  This shows up as an issue at most ranges when people don't properly post targets and it is always a concern in the field.  Lack of proper posting usually means the person is "target blind" and ends up shooting range supports or skipping rounds into or over berms.  What is "target blindness"? This is where you pay attention only to the target and not what is between you and the target, or what could come into this space, or what is behind the target.  Remember, you are responsible for the bullet from the time it leaves the barrel until it comes to rest. Most handguns have a maximum range at a 33% elevation of nearly a mile and rifles considerable more.  The only control you have over this is being aware of all the spaces before you discharge the firearm.
